Hi there!

I’m a scientist who loves to bake, and here is where I document my adventures. Maybe you’ll learn a thing a two. Thanks for being here!

Patriotic Ice Cubes perfect for the 4th Of July.

I'm sure we've all seen those adorable "layered drinks" going around the internet. It's such a fun idea for 4th of July. Layered red, white, and blue, and it's perfect for kids too! My ice cubes are a spin-off of a layered drink. Except you don't have to worry about the sugar content of each color drink (for the layered drinks you have to have varying sugar contents). When you layer ice cubes, you can freeze one layer at a time, and have total control over your layers. Freeze whatever drinks you want! I like this no-fuss layering.

All you need is an ice tray. I got my star shaped one off of Amazon. Pick whatever red, white, and blue drinks you prefer, and freeze them in layers. It's that simple.

Allow them to freeze, and put them in whatever drink you're drinking this 4th. I used different flavors of gatorade and put the ice cubes in Sprite. As the ice cubes start to melt, the color slowly bleeds into your drink, and slowly adds the new flavor. These are so much fun to drink!

Sometimes the last minute, quick and easy things are the winners. Simplicity at its best! Who doesn't have time to freeze some ice cubes?

Oh, and there's no such thing as too many pictures of ice cubes right? Is that a thing?..

This is what happens when they start to melt. The stars are bleeding fruit punch..

And this is what happens to ice cubes when you take pictures of them when it's 104 outside...

What you will need:

Ice Tray

red drink (I used gatorade for all 3)

white drink

blue drink

a freezer

and some time

Directions:

If you want your layers exact, I have a tip! (A tip I realized after I had already froze my first layer). Fill up one of your ice cubes with water, and with a straw or a medicine dropper, remove the liquid to see how much fills one ice cube. Divide it into thirds to know exactly how much of each color to put in!

If you feel like eyeballin' it, which I did, pour the red layer in to fill 1/3 of the cubes. Freeze for 45 minutes.

Fill the white liquid in another 1/3, so the cubes are 2/3 full. Freeze for another 45 minutes.

Fill the rest of the cubes up to the top with the blue liquid, and freeze for another hour.

Pop them out when you're ready and cool off any drink of your choice.

Enjoy!
